Jan Hus, a master of Charles University and preacher, feels partly responsible for the fate of the divided church and its faithful, for whom it serves as a role model. He thus attracts the resentment of the powerful. "Jan Hus" is the story of a man who, because of his convictions, faced death in the battle between the opinions and ambitions of ecclesiastical and secular authorities.

The film captures the period from May 1412 to the summer of 1415, a turbulent time in the Czech Kingdom, during which there were protests in Prague against the sale of "omnipotent indulgences" whose sale throughout the kingdom was announced by Pope John XXIII. The ideological leader of this movement is the preacher Master Jan Hus, whose words, calling for the elimination of church abuses, are listened to in the Bethlehem Chapel by thousands of ordinary Praguers, Czech lords and Queen Sophie, wife of the Czech King Wenceslas IV.

The film is set in the Norwegian high mountains in the 1820s, where mysterious natural phenomena play an important part in the plot. Young Knut Formo has gone to the mountains to hunt the great white reindeer. He spends five days hunting the buck, but never manages to catch it. We experience the tension as the rifle is aimed at the buck and his fingers curl around the trigger, and we experience the disappointment when the buck runs away after the shot. Knut gradually becomes exhausted. He begins to mix dreams and reality as his strength ebbs away. The fantasy world becomes a natural part of life for a person closely connected to a powerful nature. Based on an original screenplay by Erik Løchen.
